First, paint your nails pink.
This manicure needs a vibrant deep pink shade for a base. You can see that Katy Perry nails are not a true red shade but sort of a deep pink with a red undertone color. I figured Covergirl Outlast nail polish in Reliable Red would fit the design.

Then, add a soft pink gradient.
To add the soft pink color to my nails I used the good old makeup sponge. I have featured the sponging technique in some of my previous posts. You can take a look at my Galaxy nails and Galaxy nails tips for nail designs, tutorials and tips featuring the sponging technique.

For this tiger nail design you need to add some pale pink color to a makeup sponge and transfer the nail polish onto the sides of your nails. I used Covergirl Outlast Constant Candy which turned a little whiter than I planned, but I still love the result. You aim to cover one side of your nail and make sure to leave some of it clear so that the deep pink shade will be visible. At this point we are not aiming at a perfect gradient because tiger stripes will steal the show from the base anyways :)

Then, add tiger stripes.
Tiger stripes are easy to add free handedly with a striping brush. I used the brush which comes with a black nail art color and is specifically designed for adding detail but you can use a DIY striping brush as in my free manicure products post. Tip! Make tiger stripes thicker at the beginning and thinner at the end. This will help mimic the animal skin better and will avoid your tiger look too much like a zebra :)

Last, add a fat top coat.
The sponging technique as well as the tiger detail may make this nail art look a little patchy. Use a fat gel look top coat to blend the design together and smooth away any bumps and lumps that may have appeared.

Voila! You got that wild Katy Perry tiger manicure!

Hello manicure addicts!

Today’s post is about Galaxy nails. This is a manicure design which is created to mimic the appearance of outer space. I love how space nail art is very unique to the person who creates it. I have seen various designs, color choices and accents but I prefer to make my galaxy nails in a certain way. I just find it is the best way this design looks and will share with you tips to create the perfect outer space manicure.

Before we start I want to remind you of my Galaxy nail art tutorial. I also want to show this purple space manicure I recently created. You will see that if you follow the correct principle your space nails will turn out beautiful no matter the colors you choose.

TIP 1: Get to know the sponge technique
The sponge technique is the key part of space nails creation process. Basically you need to paint some nail color on a makeup sponge and touch your nails with it before polish has dried. This creates random splashes of color which can be built up or layered with different colors depending on the effect you want to get. Do not mix the sponge technique with the gradient colors technique as they are different! The latter aims to create a gradient application of nail color. What we need is just random color touches :)

TIP 2: Use thick and pigmented formulas
Highly pigmented nail polishes are great for sponging and therefore for space nail art because you will need a single touch to transfer the color to your nail. See through or semi sheer colors seem to soak into the sponge or leave a color which looks more like some kind of stain. They tend to blend with other colors and change them, too. So pick a slightly thicker, highly pigmented color to get the best result.

TIP 3: Use a dark color base
Galaxy nail designs aim for an outer space manicure look, so they should be applied on a dark color base. My favorite galaxy nail art features a black, a dark blue or a deep purple main color. Perhaps you can play with other colors but I suggest to use the darkest shade as your nail art canvas.

TIP 4: Do not overdo glitter
Glitter is a beautiful accent to space nails and contributes to the starry night effect so I suggest you put some after you are happy with your manicure. Be careful not to cover the complete design though. Some glitters have more particles in them. If you apply too much your manicure will lose the starry effect. If I apply too much glitter and do not like how it turns out, I start the nail over.

TIP 5: Add a dot of white
Adding a few white dots here and there seems to transform your nail design from an abstract random color art to a galaxy :) I do not know why that is but a single dot changes everything for the better. White dots look like nearer and larger stars and add some dimension to your space nails. You can use a dotting tool, a toothpick, a cuticle remover tip or pretty much anything you like to add the dots. For my purple outer space nails I applied white directly with the nail polish brush. I just whipped all excess color and carefully touched my nails in random places.

Thanks for reading! I hope these tips will help you create the best Galaxy nail art out there :).

Hello everyone!

As promised in my Glam it up! with Zendaya post, I will share with you how I recreated this beautiful monochrome nail design. I did not give up my nails shape for the sake of this tutorial but still like the result. This manicure is easier to do than it may seen, so read on.

First, paint your left hand nails black and right one’s white.
This is a monochrome design and black and white are the base colors it is built upon.

Then, use a makeup sponge to create a gradient effect.
Left hand ring and index fingers should have white gradient tip. Right hand ring and index fingers will have the opposite gradient effect, their tips should be black. I used a regular makeup sponge to create the gradient. This is my favorite gradient nails tutorial:

Add the Replay sign on middle fingers.
This was the hardest part to me because of the circle shape, but I came up with an idea. Tip! Use a needle to dot out the replay sign. Gently push the needle into your base color, it will leave tiny marks you can use for a guiding line. Then trace this line with a striping brush using the opposite color – black for white nails and vice versa.

Add the word ‘replay’ to your thumbs.
If you are good with both your hands and you can write with them, add RE to your left thumb and PLAY to your right one in opposing colors. Personally, I am right handed and I cannot write with my left hand. Tip! I decided not to ruin the design at the last step and added the ► sign to my right thumb, it is basically a black triangle :) Call it cheating but I think this design looks fabulous even that way!

Last, add a top coat
Finish off with a gel look top coat. It will seal the design and smooth out the rougher areas, especially gradient. It will also make your work last so that you can show it off.

“Replay” is Zendaya’s second single which hit the charts on July 16th 2013, taking its highest position of number 3 hit in US Hot Dance Club Songs. Her manicure for the video shoot was created by ES nail LA, the studio Zendaya trusts for her nails.

Hello everyone!

Today I want to share with you a three-step galaxy nails design. It is simple, fast and does not require perfection. This makes it great for when you are in a hurry but still want your nails to impress.

Easy Galaxy nail art and tutorial
Easy Galaxy nail art and tutorial

Easy galaxy nail design how to

First, paint your nails with two coats of black polish.
You can even apply only one thick coat of color because it will be covered by other colors and this may hide any lighter spots or smudges. I have seen this nail art painted over dark blue and I believe that a dark enough color looks OK, I have not tried it myself though.

Then randomly sponge some white, blue and purple color onto your nails.
Just put some nail polish on a makeup sponge and touch your nails here and there. Really, “random” is the key word for this design. I love using the sponge technique as it is fast and you can do it to both your hands with ease. A downside is that it can be a little messy but practice makes perfect and in a few tries you won’t need to clean too much up. When sponging, start with white on the largest area, than blue, and then purple in smaller areas. You can add some larger white dots to pretend for stars if you wish but this step is not essential to the look.

Last, add a glitter top coat.
At this point you won’t need to add a finishing top coat as the glitter nail polish is a top coat itself. However, if your design has turned out a little bumpier and you want to smooth it out, I would suggest to use a clear top coat as glitter may build up and leave your galaxy way too sparkly : )
